how do you name a star for someone? I know it's possible and I've seen it in movies, but I don't know anyone who has actually done it. Can you? And is it something only a guy can do for a girl? Or can a girl name a star for a guy? would that be corny? Can you name more than just stars, like a nebula or unnamed planet?

All these companies are doing is selling you a book with your name in it. They claim that the naming is "official" because it is registered in the US Copyright Office in Washington DC.

I can register a document claiming that I am king of the world in the US Copyright Office. It doesn't make it so.

Just do a search on "name a star". There are many companies. They publish the name in a book which they copyright. It is a novelty. Anyone can name a star and I guarantee there are duplicates between companies.

BTW: For $500 I will name the moon for you. I will even send you a piece of paper certifying it.

its just a fad like pet rocks its just a piece of paper that says you named a star after someone but in order to really name a star or planet you have to discover it yourself and even then your should give it a scientific name. although if you discover a comet you can name it like Hally's or hale- bop
