Ok. I am working on something to do with a mafia in Italy.
It would be helpful if someone could tell me about a place or city in Italy that is most likely to have a mafia.
It has to have quite a rich part for the mafia members to live but I'm guessing it also has to be quite rough as you don't usually get mafias in upper class areas... Know what I mean?

Thanks if anyone can help!

Hi there! I live in Sicily and I can give you a brief explanation on what the so-called "mafia" situation is really like.

"Mafia" is just a word that you mostly see in films and the media. It's a flashy word that doesn't really represent what the organized crime organizations are like in Italy. They are VERY organized, highly effective, efficient, wealthy and powerful.

They are present in ALL of Italy with their main concentrations in the southern regions of Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicily. Each region has their own crime organization and they NEVER infiltrate the crime turf of the neighboring regions. These organizations produce a whopping 10% of Italy's GDP! We're talking over a 100 Billion Euros a year (130 Billion US Dollars)!

Here's a rundown of the crime organizations:

1.) Reggio Calabria (Calabria): 'Ndrangheta
2.) Campania (Naples): La Camorra
3.) Sicily (Palermo): Cosa Nostra
4.) Puglia: Sacra Corona Unita

Cosa Nostra is the organization that attracts the media the most because they're located in Sicily (mainly Palermo) and because of those stupid godfather films. But it is not the most powerful. In fact, it's 3rd on the list. The most powerful is 'Ndrangheta.

This group barely ever makes world news because they are very low profile, silent...but deadly. They are heavily into drug trafficking. In fact, it's been said that 'Ndrangheta is the ONLY crime organization in the world that is allowed to establish credit with the south american drug cartels.

Who are the members? Believe it or not, the real members who contribute to these organizations are all upper class white collar workers who manage the businesses for the illegal activities (lawyers, doctors, engineers, bankers, business owners, state employees, etc.).

All the every day crime activities (robberies, killings, fighting) you read about do not really represent these organizations. They are just simple little crime gangs who try to establish a name and a living for themselves.

Last, but not least, all these crime organizations would have never have gotten as far they did without the help of Italian politics. Now, it's too late to dismantle them because the roots are too deep and they are too many people involved.

Italians just learn to live with them...

If you are researhing about the mafia, they really are historically more associated, particularly with sicily.

I'm not sure I follow your question really but mafia leaders in the US have traditionally lived in the finest neighborhoods. Certainly their incomes would placed them in the very upper class of incomes at least.

Mafia's heads are most likely to settle in the industrial triangle cities in Italy as Torino...
but the most dangerous city and which is,as i guess, full of mafia groups, i mean those who do the crimes, is Cicily.

M.a.f.i.a. is an acyronym translated from this a war chant from ww1 = "Death to France is Italy's cry". STOP the lies and "bs" brought on by hollywood and those who dont understand the Italian people.
