There seems to be little in your most private life that does not stroke with one hand while it threatens to strike with the other

Deep down inside, when you are being loved ("stroke") you expect to be punished or attacked ("strike").

Be careful about harboring expectations that all forms of pleasure bring pain.

when something in your private life is important enough to you that it gives you pleasure to contemplate it on the one hand it also can have the opposite effect on you when you think about loosing it I have a girlfriend who is light years younger than I am I love her with all my being and that strokes my mind and heart with a tenderness that is unbelievable but at the same time there lurks the possibility that she will leave me and the pain that would be associated with that happening would be as a flaming sword plunged into my heart and soul so that is the threat part of that statement... the sword of Damocles that hangs above my head by a single hair from her head. She can made my life or break my life with a single gesture... I placed myself in that situation because if you dare nothing in this life you experience nothing.. the Eagles sing about it : "we are like sheep without a Shepard, we don't know how to be alone, so we wonder around the desert and end up following the wrong dogs home" right now she is my oasis in that desert and I can only hope that it is not a mirage..would I not go there just because I might get hurt....no.. the exquisite pleasure of just hearing her laugh would forever haunt me if I walked away out of fear
