a V8 has 8 cylinders, a V6 or an inline 6 has six cylinder

Into engine block, there are round chambers where the pistons are propelled by explosions of a fuel air mixture. These are cylinders. Some engines have 1, some 2, some 4, some 8, some 10, some 12, some 16.
Usually an even number as this balances better and runs smoother. The pistons connect to a crankshaft, which connects to a transmission (gear change), to a drive shaft, to a differential, to the axles, and to the wheels to turn explosions into travel of the car.
A six is generally easier on fuel, and runs fairly smooth. The more cylinders, the smoother (less vibration). An eight has more power, in general,
and is often hi-compression, meaning the space is decreased a lot between when the fuel-air is introduced into the cylinder and when it ignites, giving a more powerful explosion, and needing higher octane gas which explodes LESS readily than low octane (low octane would explode too soon causing knocking and power loss).
So if economy is your chief concern, get a six, but if you need to pull a large load, a hemi or a vortec 8 cylider with a large cubic dispacement (the space decrease earlier discussed) would be the way to go.
Merry Christmas!

as for all the people who said that a v8 uses more fuel then a v6... this is not true. i have a v6 in my s10 and it get s about 14mpg. and ive got a hot -rodded 283 uot of a corvette in my '64 c10 that gets around 19mpg. all you have to do is take some time and tune everything.

the 8 cylinder will have more power and torque but use more petrol because you have more parts that have to be moved

a V8 has more power and uses more fuel...a V6 has two less and comes standard in most cars, unless you have a truck or SUV or something that needs a lot of power to maintain speed around turns and up hills
