We helped to rebuild Germany after WW2?
Why do you think we did that?
How was it helpful for Europe as a whole?

believe it or not, but some people do judge us based on what happened 60 years ago.
No, I don't want eternal gratitude, but a little introspect into their own histories and casting off "holier than thou" attitudes, and yes recognition would be nice.
Not that everything we do is good, but also not everything we do is wrong.

I've heard it from New Zealanders and Aussies. I know it's not European, but I was wondering if it came from there. Thanks. helpful.

We did that to prevent WWIII in 20 years after WWII, as WWII happened 20 years after WWI ended. When WWI ended, Germany lost and was charged by England and France huge fines for the war. They were already in economic trouble before the Great Depression hit the world in 1929. It got much worse in Germany. People starved to death and were dying so quickly that people were giving the job to go around each morning to collect the dead, much like during the Plague. Those conditions helped the Communists and the Fascists get support from the people who were extremely angry toward England and France for putting them in this position and supposedly doing away with the military. That's how Hitler got into power and did the horrible things he did to Germany and most of Europe and caused the European part of WWII.
After the War, we realized that we had to help rebuild Germany so that the Communists couldn't get a strong hold and take over. Germany was devastated after the second war and couldn't do it on its own. The US gained support in Germany and Europe for helping them to become whole again after a war that took a great toll on American forces.

I have lived in Europe all my life and I've traveled all over the continent and I have never heard a European express anger at America for rebuilding Germany. Quite the opposite people are grateful for what the United States did in Europe in WW2 and in the years after it. But most Europeans strongly disagree with what the U.S. have been doing in recent years and are mad at the current U.S. administration and the people who voted it into power TWICE. There is a good reason why people are criticizing the U.S. in recent years and it doesn't mean that Europeans are ungrateful for WW2, it just means we won't support injustice even when it's committed by a nation that has done a lot for Europe in the past.

Germans are Europeans - so the Germans like the Americans for that (I know I lived in Germany).
We did that because we were concerned that Europe could fall under the control of the Soviet Union and the communists - we also wanted to build a better world and we felt (and I believe correctly) that a strong country both politically democratic and economically capitalist in Germany was important to bring that into reality - the last 61 years seem to prove that to be true. There has not been a major war in Europe during that time which has benefited Europe as a whole greatly a brought to Europeans one of the highest standards of living in the world - in fact in all world history.
Good Luck!!!

We don't seem united because we speak against the war and the President. Man that is funny to me as an American. See in America we call that FREE SPEECH, and it is one of the GREATEST RIGHTS we have. It is part of why we are united. Europeans are too much of conformists based on that type of thinking. Everyone should think the same and be the same. Well here the united is shown in everyone being different. Seriously I wasn't aware that Europeans were mad at us over Germany. I wasn't even aware they were mad at us as a whole. Thought it was our Govt. On top of that what does what we did 60+ years ago have to do with why they should like us. Man no wonder they don't like us. We expect eternal gratitude by that thought.

Defining what you mean by Europeans, not all are mad at America.
The news media portrays America as a selfish country and that is what the other countries see on the news.
I believe that we, as Americans, are at fault if we are hated. As a majority, we do not practice what we preach. We do not appear to be United any longer, we speak against the war, the President, the congress, the laws, etc. etc. We show bigotry towards any one not of America.
Truth is, we are not all that way.
United we stand, divided we fall. We are going to fall if we do not stand behind our leaders, through thick and thin. God Bless our Troops.

what makes you think Europeans are mad at America? I'm sure there are a lot of diverse feelings about America all over Europe just as there are in many other countries of the world not including countries which are being occupied or having their governments destabilized by the American military autocracy at this particular moment.

It's funny listening to Europeans complain about America. We're all like a bunch of bickering cousins at a family reunion.
However, let an outsider mess with any of us, we bond together like we were brothers from the beginning.
Even France.

Well, the Europeans don't like Americans a whole lot because they think Americans are very conservative and close-minded. I can't blame the Europeans for thinking that. I'd know because I'm Russian, and all my family in Russia do not like the Americans. They also do not like us for that whole war in Iraq. They think it's kind of stupid.

It's not America the Europeans are angry at, it's George Bush and the people who voted for him--TWICE.
You could have forgiven the Americans who voted for Bush the first time, but when they voted for him a second time, it showed the American voters to be unsophisticated.
Europeans look down on Americans for that reason.
They think you're all rednecks.

we rebuilt Germany because we have heart, and are not mean bastards like most countries think or pretend we are. Plus Germany is a leading manufacture in sports cars and electronics, behind the Japanese.
