My native language is Russian, because I was born in Russia. I can also understand some dialects of Ukrainian. I learned English when I moved to the United States, and I picked up French in high school.

I'm still struggling along with English. I was doing pretty good until I discovered Yahoo Answers.
When I read some of the questions asked, I'm not sure if they're in English or some similar language.
I live in the USA.

Native English, born in US, live in San Diego.
I speak fluent French (learned it in high school and by living in France for 2 years), Tagalog (studied on my own, visited Philippines a lot, and have a Filipina wife), and Japanese (lived in Japan for 1 year, took some classes but mostly learned on my own).
I speak enough Spanish to get by (taught myself, easy to practice in San Diego!), and can converse reasonably well in Chinese (business trips mostly, self-study), Thai (self-study, vacations), and Italian (business trips and self-study).

Once you really learn *one* language other than your native one, learning other languages becomes easier. You start to understand how different languages are structured, the difference between grammar and vocabulary, and how to learn another language. It gets easier the more languages you learn.

I speak English. They had us take spanish in school but the teacher sucked. He let us look up dirty words in the english to spanish dictionary. All I know in Spanish is colors and some other easy words. I was thinking of taking an online class in Spanish.
Happy Holidays!
