It appears on TV that the pipe is maybe 150-200 yards from the pad.

OK, I need to clarify something. The fire is burning BEFORE the launch, so it's not vented exhaust from the launch itself.

below the launchpad is a deep pit which is flushed with water during launch to keep down shockwaves which could harm the launch complex. this pit is open to one side to allow the exhaust vents to escape in a controlled manner
this may explain why it looks like theres some fire spewing skyward

The rocket thrust/exhaust has to go somewhere, so it is ducted in a controlled manner in a harmless direction
