I would like a 17" flat screen, a printer/scanner suitable for photos, and a CD burner.
Can anyone suggest an economical package ($500-$600)? Thank you.

Normally I would suggest Dell because they have some really good prices on there machines. They USED to provided excellent service too until the last couple of years. Reports indicate and I have my own personal experience as well that DELL is no longer a very reputable company for quality or craftsmenship. I have a new Dell computer that was right about in your price range slightly more and it has broke down on my twice since I have had it. I purchased it in late June and another thing about Dell is they will NOT give you any disc's with your computer so that you CAN NOT re install a fresh copy of windows should a disaster happen. I needed those disc's recently from DELL because my system got messed up to the point it would not BOOT at all. The famous PC -restore which I have never liked the idea of Failed rendering my computer a useless shell of metal. I argued for Hours with dell to make them send me my disc's it took more than 2 weeks to get them to send them. Also they wanted me to send my computer back to them for repair when they new all I needed was the disc's. I refused to do so because countless thousands of people on there own website forums are still waiting to get there computers back after sending them in for repair. Some have been waiting over a year.
I Personally suggest HP (Hewett Packard) They have really made an effort to upgrade the quality and craftsmanship of there stuff. There customer service has raves about how good it is over the last year or so as well. They also make a real nice little computer for your price range. You can get the least expensive from them at about 325.00 But that like I said is the least.
However for your price range you can get exactly what your looking for from them. Some things I would recommend thinking about before you buy is
1. Am I going to want to eventually install Windows Vista on this computer?
2. Can you wait it out until Windows Vista comes pre-installed on the computer you want to buy?
3.How important is the speed of your computer to you?
There are a couple of Key accessories you are looking for along with this computer one is the 17 flat which you'll be able to find included in a good many computer offers, but secondly the printer/scanner. If you can find what your looking for in that price range w/o the printer you can always go to wall-mart and pick up a Lexmark all in one printer scanner and copier for under 50.00.
Here are some system requirments that I would highly suggest you concider in your purchase.
RAM (Random access memory) this is what allows you to do more than one thing at a time on your computer without slowing it to a crawl. example checking e-mail while downloading a song. OR playing a game on the web and listening to music. You should really look at 512 mb's of RAM as the least amount for the computer you choose because if it only 256 you will find nothing but trouble in running many of todays applications no matter what system you end up choosing. My least option would be 1GB of RAM personally but many have 512 and are happy.
2. The Processor... This is the over speed component at which your computer can handle commands. I suggest no lower then a pentium 4 or higher. Dual core would be best however. Look at the kind of processor when you buy. Or ask for details about how fast the processor is before you buy.
I noticed that one person recommended an E-machine. Although these are priced right look at the spec's before choosing one of these. They are often Wall-mart specials and you get what you pay for.
Happy hunting and good luck to you in what ever you choose just please for your sake stay clear of DELL. I say that as a person owning 2 Dell computers and until recently I would of suggested DELL but because of my recent experiences with them as well as thousands of others DELL is very Iffy lately. There are some people who ordered from DELL in the last year that never received their computers at all because they were sent to the wrong address completely and yet DELL is taking them to collections in order to get payment for computers they never received. Don't buy DELL Don't by DELL DON"T BUY DELL it will be HELL.
Good luck and happy holidays
may you be happy when you purchase a new machine what ever it may be. Also take a look on newegg.com they have some great deals on your computer needs.

There is no such thing as a economical package for a computer. Keep this in mind that you get what you pay for.

If you however just want a good computer for things you have described, try eBay and shop around. There is hundreds of hundreds of good computers being auctioned off every day.

If you are thinking for the future as far as up-grades. A ecno computer is limited. Many can only be up-graded very little.

Ram is speed! Look and see how much more you can add later.

Hard drive. You will need at least a 160 GB if you are going to store Music as well as Photos.

Most people do not look as into next month or a few monts ahead. Once you start adding software, music, photos as well as other things the good New Computer will slow down.

Plan ahead and get a good loaded computer. What you may spend more for you will be happy in the end and never have to do upgraded. It cost more in the end to upgrade than a loaded computer will cost.

Good luck and have fun shopping.

You should watch for specials at Office Depot, COMPUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City or any othe computer store or office supply store. I have seen some relatively inexpensive ($399) computers with a 17" LCD. The printer/scanner ought to run around $250 or less at any of those stores. You will get a Celeron or Sempron for your money, but you aren't asking for a power machine. For what you want to do, a nice eMachines with an on-board video card will do.

I've come to appreciate the reliability and low pricing of Dells. I used to build my own computers but can't compete with what you can get from one of the OEMs. I guess if I were to desire a killer gaming machine, then I'd build my own. But the OEM computers like Dell, Gateway, etc., suffice for most people's daily needs.

I recommend HP. They have the best products ever and they have reasonable prices. Desktops start at $250 and Laptops start at about $550. You can customize them on the internet and order from there. Go to www.hp.com
