Oh yes, been caught out on that one way too many times. I now check the boxes first and make a note of the different sized batteries I will need for say Xmas Day. That way I can guarantee that none of my sons will be disappointed on the day.
For birthdays I enclose the relevant batteries with the gift. It just ensures that the child can play with the toy on the day and the parents aren't running around trying to find suitable ones.

We keep a stock of batteries, and tend to read boxes so we are prepared. The bigger issue for us is either the dreaded phrase "some assembly required" (which seems to mean you have to pour the plastic into injection molds and smelt iron to make your own screws) or the dizzying number of twist ties and tape they use to attach every part of a toy to every other part, as well to every interior surface of the box.

Always buy batteries. The batteries that do come with toys are usually junk .

Huh? Other than an electric watch, what does come with batteries included?

When I was a young parent I made that mistake, but not any more. I always have batteries stored, just in case.

my fiance went to the store last night at 10 to buy MORE batteries!! You would think with having three kids we would have learned to double check on that by now!

Nope. Once bitten - always read the package before you buy it - and I keep extra batteries at home for all sizes.

I hate when that happens. My suggestion: always keep some extra batteries around your house.
