Is it really so easy for you to tell each others accents apart, when they sound similar, or is that often claimed in order to mess with foreigners who aren't immersed in your cultures?

Hey! You can tell people from different states, can't you? And you can tell Canadians from Americans? This is because you have heard these differences all your life.

Well, we can tell the difference at a word between people from, not just counties, but from individual cities. A person from Manchester sounds different from one from Liverpool, from Newcastle, from London (even different parts of London) from Birmingham etc. etc. So it really is easy to tell a person from Australia.

We definitely don't do it to try to confuse you.

I spent quite a time in Washington State some years ago and many people asked me if I was Australian. After a while people in Birch Bay were able to tell the difference between us and the few Australians who visited.

Yep! We DO sound very different!

p.s. To many English people ALL American accents sound the same, despite the many (to you) obvious differences between the southern drawl, the New Yoik twang and the mid-west stridency.

Vive le difference!

Cheers,

I prefer Aussies to Brits, including their accents. Aussies are more easy going like Americans, while Brits are too stiff.

The accents are totally different. I lived in England for a few years and the accents vary in all parts of the country...
