if you have to use distribution type., you must group 2 terms with common factors.

x^2 + 4x have x in common and 2x + 8 have 2 in common

factoring out

x(x + 4) + 2 (x + 4)

then they have (x + 4) as a common factor so factor it out
= (x + 4) (x + 2)

you can group different terms, like

x^2 and 2x have x in common and 4x and 8 have 4 in common

factoring out

x (x + 2) + 4 (x + 2)

same process, = (x + 2) (x + 4)., done

you can also add 4x and 2x since they are like terms which gives x^2 + 6x + 8., it would also give you ( x + 4) (x + 2)
