Good question, I think it will happen but not for at least another 70 years or so, people have laughed at many of thing that they said would never happen, but they have and none of us know whats around the corner, have a lovely Christmas.

That question has been around for at least 60 years now. With self guided cars around now, and GPS this could be achieved in 10 years (auto pilot from place A to B).
With Bush throwing away $1 Trillion to Iraq, and exporting jobs by the Millions, that may stay a pipe dream.

By the time personal flying machines are developed and cheap enough for the masses, they will not be airplanes in the traditional sense. They will be some sort of VOTLs with very quiet motors.
