I got a new job and have to move across country. I am driving from Northeast Ohio to Portland Oregon on January 1st. I was wondering if anyone had done this and what route I should take. I can either go I-80 towards Omaha then jump on I-90 through South Dakota, Monatana, and Washington. The other option is to take I-80 all the way to Salt Lake and then take I-84 to Portland. The are both 36 hours. I was just wondering which one would be a better drive? Thanks.

80's awesome if you like cows and fields. LOL You do get to drive past Ronald Reagan's hometown and birth place though...that's cool.

And, you get to cross the Misssissippi...that's pretty cool too (much bigger than I thought).

I haven't driven 90, so I don't know, but 80 I've driven a lot. Roads aren't bad, but the speed limit is slower on 80 until you get to Nebraska.

If you're into taking side trips, we always stop off in Chicago on the way there.

(I live in Michigan...)

Nebraska is even worse for cows, but if you go at the right time of year you might get to see a series of cool tornados...(last three trips out there, we saw no less than 2 tornadoes, and once we got to see 3 at once, while we were driving).

I don't know. It's not a great drive till Oregon. Which is BEAUTIFUL. Good luck!

First things first ; regardless of what the idiot computer at mapquest said you will not be able to do this trip in 36 hours. Think about it. It's approximately 2400 miles from Cleveland to Portland . In order to do that distance in 36 hours you have to average 67mph, in order to do that ,your mean speed need to be in the 110 mph range. [ 36 hrs minus 2 nights in a motel @ 7 hours per night = 22hrs/ 2400 miles = 109 mph ] No can do.
Under winter conditions I would add at least another 48 hours onto the 36 hours quoted.
Personall I would stay on I-80
When I reached the the junction of I-84 , I would get a very good weather report and see what the weather through Idaho and Oregon was like. If bad I would check the weather at Donner Pass / Truckee CA . and if the weather going over Donner was going to stay good for the next 14 hours , I would stay on I-80 ,go over the Sierra and take I-5 north from Sacramento . This detour will add about 500 miles onto the trip .but can be a good option
Obviously you will need to have snow chains and the capability of surviving a night in the car in really cold temps .
Good luck and be careful out there

I live in North Dakota... The drive through western montana, idaho, and washington is beautiful... I highly recommend that route. i-90 also takes you through rapid city and the Black Hills National Forest in south dakota (home of Mount Rushmore National Park and many other tourist attractions). Its a really beautiful area! There are a lot of small, quaint little towns along the way, as well as bigger towns spotted along as you need them.

It really is beautiful scenery pretty much the whole way!

The drive through eastern South Dakota won't be the highlight of the drive, but it won't last long. If you DO take this route, please don't pass up the black hills area... there are tons of attractions and waterfalls, and natural history areas.
Ive been to places along that route many times, if youd like any more info, just say so :)

pass dollars! That being reported- What Terrelle Pryor did interior the Rose Bowl to Oregons protection constructive gets me excited for next 12 months. i grew to become into additionally very shocked how nicely the protection contained Masoli. If i grew to become into informed that Oregon could be held to 17 factors- i could have felt exceedingly darn good approximately that interest. I did run into and fool who referred to as this win "good fortune", yet needless to say he did no longer watch the interest as OSU ruled ALL interest. I additionally observed a distinctive Jim Tressel in this interest, deffinatly an more advantageous one. TP having a large interest constructive helped out with those calls too. O-H!

I'd take the more southerly route, since it's winter, although you're likely to hit snow either way. Check the weather and road conditions before you go--that may help you make up your mind.
I took 80 when I made a similar drive.

There's a great highway travel website that shows you details of every exit of every interstate in the USA. It even shows where you find the cleanest restrooms, which hotels have interior hallways (as opposed to exiting from the room directly to the parking lot.) Looking for dog-friendly hotels, a list of Dairy Queens, and hundreds of more details. This is head and shoulders above MapQuest.
