St. Nicholas. He was supposed to be quite wealthy. A young couple were getting married, they were very poor. St. Nicholas was supposed to have got into their house and left a purse of money for them. I can't remember fully, but I don't think they had any furniture, so it was so they could buy some. After that, St. Nicholas would help needed people. He would leave a purse of money in their home, I think he got in through a window, hence Father Christmas coming down the chimney.

Below is a piece I found about St Nicholas

Saint Nicholas

St Nicholas was a real person who was born to a wealthy family in Lycia, Asia Minor (now known as Turkey) sometime between 270 and 280 AD. He was orphaned at an early age and grew up in a monastery becoming one of the youngest priests ever at the age of 17. He travelled to Palestine and Egypt before returning to Lycia to become Bishop of Myra.

Nicholas was a very generous man, known for his charity and wisdom, who gave away his wealth to those in need. He would often go out at night, disguised in a hooded cloak, to leave gifts of money, clothing or food for the poor and underprivileged.

He died on 6 December 340 and was buried in the church in Myra. After his death he was canonised, becoming the patron saint of Greece, Russia, children, scholars, merchants, sailors and travellers.

In 1087 religious soldiers from Italy took the remains of St Nicholas back to Bari in southern Italy where they built a church in honour of him - the Basilica of San Nicola. This greatly increased his popularity in Europe, with pilgrims from all over the world coming to visit his shrine. Each of them took his legend back to their native countries where, as his fame spread, it took on the characteristics of each country. One thing remained common to all however, and that was the traditional image of the Bishop's mitre, long flowing robes, red cape and white beard.

There are many legends surrounding St Nicholas, the most famous of which tells how he gave bags of gold to three poor sisters for their dowries, throwing them down the chimney where they landed in some stockings which had been hung up by the fire to dry. This gave rise to the custom of giving gifts on his feast day (6 December), a practice which is still followed in the Netherlands and Germany where children leave their shoes out on St Nicholas Eve and hope that they will be filled with sweets and gifts the next morning. Elsewhere this has been incorporated into Christmas due to his identification with Santa Claus - a corruption of his Dutch name of 'Sinter Klaas'.

and here is another piece, it give much more detail. You will see how the father christmas outfit, the chimney and the stocking came into being.

A SAINT FOR THE WEEK
December 6th. St. Nicholas.

Substantial information about St. Nicholas is that he was a bishop of Myra, in S. W. Turkey, in the 4th century. When the Moslems cane to Myra in tbe 11th century his relics were taken to Bari in Italy, where the fine church of San Nicola was built to house them. It was from this time that his popularity spread. Various incidents recorded in the 'Acts' of St. Nicholas explain his patronage of different groups: of children, through his miraculously restoring to life three boys murdered by a butcher; of sailors, through his saving of three of them off the Turkish coast; of young women through his providing three of them with a bag of gold each as a dowry to save them from prostitution (this being the origin of the pawnbroker's sign of three golden balls). He is also, via his patronage of children, Santa Claus, a custom originating in the Low Countries and taken to North America by Dutch settlers. St. Nicholas is the secondary patron of the city of Portsmouth.

I am so glad you asked this question, it was great to read the story again, it ties in so nicely with christianity and the story of Jesus.

Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply Santa, is a legendary gift-giving icon who distributes presents to sleeping children who have been "good" all year; traditionally during the night of December 24, Christmas Eve. The popular American form Santa Claus originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas). There is much debate as to whether he really exists or if he's just a legend, but many people claim to have seen a flying sleigh on the night of Christmas Eve.

Father Christmas is a well-loved figure in many countries and predates the Santa Claus character. Father Christmas is similar in many ways, though the two have quite different origins. Using 'Santa' in places that predominantly call him Father Christmas may be viewed as an Americanism, although they are generally nowadays regarded as the same character.

Okay well kris kringle was a poor man. he needed a job so he could feed him and his wife. So he and his wife went down the the unemployment office, took a number, and waited quietly. After hours of waiting, the clerk finally called his number. He looked at his wife, she wished him good luck, and he walked up to the desk. The clerk was baffled by the fact that he didnt finish high skool, and didnt want to deliver the paper, stuff envelopes, bag food at a supermarket or anything! as the clerk shook her head in disgust and annoyment, kris heard a little baby scream. he turned his head to see a tiny woman with an infant child. He got up from his chair and walked over to the two. with the baby continuing with the screaming, he thought how to get its attention. AH HAH! he ho ho hoed really loud, and the baby stopped and looked at kris dead in the eye. he pulled out of his pocket a 10000000000000000000000000000000 dollar bill and handed it to the woman. keep it and do whatever you want. The woman stood up and thanked kris. then he turned and pulled out a glowing childs play dolly. then outta coincidence, the clerk received a fax that a Santa was needed! the clerk screamed his name and kris and his wife were transported out of nowhere to the north pole. and they LIVE (not lived) happy for ever and ever!!!!!! yes that is how it really happened!

Santa Claus is a tradition which is many, many years old, however the traditional Santa wore a green suit! It was in fact only Coca Cola who gave him a red suit, which means that every book or television programme that shows Santa in a red suit could be potentially sued by Coca Cola for copyright!

How about the question in English?
Father Christmas is the Anglicized version of Saint Nicholas or Sint Claas in Dutch. He was an early Bishop of the Church who secretly distributed presents to orphan children in December.

Stovepipe hats. nicely polished with 1st Baron Beaverbrook grease. Electoral vote, besides the indisputable fact that the authorities can basically make regulations that restriction themselves, and we may be able to throw rotten vegetables from the Senate gallery and get factors for direct hits.
