I don't know, maybe you can use tapcons or brick clips instead.

Mike I'm a brick layer, you don't need the studs for this, masonry anchors will do the job, its like the 3 little pigs the brick are always stronger, and odds are if its a fireplace they are no studs where a mantel will go, that's all brick for the smoke chamber and throat,

Start at a corner, If the house was built to specifications, measure out 16" and it should be the center of the stud. The studs are placed 16" apart. On some very old homes, they are on a 22" center. You can also buy an electric Stud-finder (battery operated)

A stud-finder will NOT WORK thru a brick wall! The anchors that I suggest will NOT require a hammer-drill. Use Masonry screws at your local hardware store. When you buy a package of them the masonry drill bit will be sold with them to go with the screws. This project should not be difficult with these. Have a great Christmas with your family!

why bother locating studs? just use masonry anchors. if you go to a hardware store, home depot or menards, they can help you find the things you need to mount a mantle on a brick wall. mostly likely you'll need a hammer drill, masonry bits, anchors, and some kind of mounting brackets. if not store bought brackets you may have to build some. hope this helps.

If you have a brick wall you do not need to find any studs. Just mount it with tap-cons (as long as they can be hidden )

you could use mathematics.most houses use a standard measurement of 16 inches on center between stud to stud. so go to the corner of the wall measure every 16 inches until you've reached your desired location.
