I received a giftcard to a local bookstore for Christmas. I currently have read all the books that I have been wanting to. I am out of ideas for good books. Do you have any good suggestions? (I like thrillers, suspence, true crimes, I don't like romance, I would prefer something historical. I also like psychology books like Sybil, The Child called It, and When Rabbit Howls.

Sounds like me.
The Child Called It is very sad but good. I also love historical fiction. Try reading Girl in Blue by Ann Rinaldi, and some other books by her. I also like Light in the Forest (classic) but it's very short and good. I'm sure there are lots more, but I can't seem to remember them all right now. Please read those books I just recommended. Email me for more titles of books!

Try "The Mists of Avalon" or "The Firebrand" by Marion Zimmer Bradley. They aren't necessarily historical, but they are based off myths (the Arthurian legend for the first, the Trojan War for the latter), and they describe things not at all like a fairy tale, but like events that really could have happened (i.e. they fit into a historical scheme). Neither is immensely strong on romance- it's there, but to help the plot, not so readers can sigh over it, you know? I love them both because they completely turn the myths over on their heads, but believably, because they tell the stories from women's point of view, and they're well-written with tons of great aspects: war, love, betrayal, threesomes, incest, ancient pagan Goddess-worship, lies, deception, redemption, religious fighting, fate, destiny, magic, murder . . . the list goes on. They're both very good (particularly "Mists") and perfect reading- you'll gasp at certain points, and it'll be a real-page turner.

Happy reading, whatever you choose!

since you like thrillers, suspense, and psychology, try Barbara Vine. she often writes complex psychological thrillers, also try books under her real name of Ruth Rendel. if your into serial killers try the novel that the Showtimes Dexter are based on, Darkly Dreaming Dexter, and Dearly Devoted Dexter, both by Jeff Lindsay. he offers an almost new take on the whole serial killer novel genre. for historical read the Senator and the Socialite by Lawrence Otis Graham about the first black elected US senator. try Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, it is one of the best true crime books ever written, it reads like a novel. hope all these help.

The Knights Templar Mystery series by Michael Jecks:

The Last Templar
The Merchant's Partner
A Moorland Hanging
The Crediton Killings
The Abbot's Gibbet
The Leper's Return
. . . and more I haven't read yet.

Sir Baldwin Furnshill, Keeper of the King's Peace and former Knight Templar, and his partner, Simon Puttock, bailiff of Lydford, solve murder mysteries with no modern forensic science, but lots of interviewing witnesses to check inconsistencies, ordinary physical evidence, and cool-headed logic. You'll love them.

The Things They Carried - great book.

The Mysterious Stranger - classic. It's Mark Twain but not like anything else he ever wrote.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelo

Night - Elie Wiesel

Alas Babylon, by Pat Frank, is a Classic page turner (I've read it about four times and will read it again). It's about how a small group of people in a small town in Florida survive atomic war. (It's a bit dated, but wow!). They have to learn how to live without phones, electricity, automobiles; how to hunt and gather and preserve their food, fend off criminals. And the doctor treats everyone right out of his medical bag and what he can device, because that is all he has.

Try Laurie King; my favorite of hers is Folly; she also has a great historical suspense series starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice.
You can also try going to Amazon.com, going to a book you like and asking for others like this or recommendations.
