Fact - Most of their money comes from TV channels buying the rights to their games (a regional cable deal, unlike the NFL with the national TV contract). Last year the Yankees actually lost money, not selling their games for enough. They also earn lots obviously from their ticket sales and merchandise.

The way the Yankees get all the money is because they are most popular team in the MLB. When you are the most popular team, you get most fans. Also because New York is heavily populated. So that's another reason why the have lots of fans. When fans buy tickets, that's money. Also, if you are good you attract even more fans. Everybody wants to go the games. They also have great players. They have sponsorships. People buy merchandise.

The Yankees own the YES network as well having various radio affiliates.

Add that with paraphernalia and memorbilia sales of some the most popular current and past baseball players of all-time and you have a money making machine.

The Yankees logo is the most popular logo in sports.
Like him or hate him George knows how to make money.

Every sports franschise has many streams of revenue. It only makes sense that the most successful team in the biggest market would have the most money. BTW Steinbrenner GOT filthy rich AFTER he bought the Yankees. He made the most out of his investment. He was far from the wealthiest team owner when he bought the team.

Everyone here is right, but here is the important thing......The Yanks have an owner who is willing to spend it !!!!! I'm sure the Yanks don't have that much more $$ than the Cubs, but the Tribune Co. isn't as willing to spend it.

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I can see it would be fun to be one when you have an owner who spends like theirs.
