Alcohol is a depressant... so when you have a little it makes you feel sleepy.... when you have a lot.... it makes you seem really awake and lively, but did you ever notice how a couple hours later your body begins to crash.... that's the effects of the alcohol... basically the alcohol makes you over tired... and in turn makes you even more tired when you stop drinking it.

A friend who was in Alcoholics Anonymous told me they noted a cyclic metabolism of alcohol that manifested itself in 4 hours of hyper and then 4 hours of depressed activity; this cycle repeats until the alcohol is out of your system. At low doses, I imagine there isn't enough to trigger the mass cycle (viz. the folks who drink one glass of wine at night to make them sleep). At higher doses, the body would have to kick into full metabolic mode and the cycles would be more apparent.
