I have a months-old Dell Inspiron 1000. I brought for $250 due to a cracked screen and replaced it for less than $200. My fiancee paid $650 for her Inspiron 5150 three years and the motherboard just went bad.

I have 2 laptops. 1 was from some friends who upgraded, and gave me their old one for free, the other from the company I work for, also for free. I primarily use the company laptop, as it is a little more robust.

Well, mine was free because my former employer gave it to me. Craigslist and eBay have decent ones for around $500. But, frankly, it's worth spending the extra few hundred to buy a brand new one, if you can. Keep an eye on the weekly online ads at all the major stores for a deal.
