Meditation is an avenue for self understanding. The more you understand who you are the better you will feel and the happier you will be. At first, you might feel what you discover is a mess in yourself, but as you go deeper, the more you will forget about yourself find your meaning in the world and the happier you will be.

You can not, you WILL be happy in yourself. However, meditation is not just sitting there and do nothing (that would rather be contemplation). There are techniques which you should learn (yoga for ex.) and tools that you should learn to use, like mandalas.
Also meet a swami if offered the opportunity : those people are great ! (swami means a life saint in Hindu).
Try it, it is worth the effort!

Meditation does not create happiness, but a better sense of being.
it helps you to clear your mind, have a higher understanding of yourself and things around you.
meditation might add to you to help you to become happier...such as giving you time to think, relax and breathe properly. People rarely take the time to sit with good posture and listen to their own breathing. This alone should make you more grateful and in turn add to your happiness.

One does not go IN to feel happiness. We go OUT, or expand, to feel happiness. Meditation isn't a journey inside ourselves. Meditation is a journey across everything everywhere. Meditation is a very good way to find happiness.

Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. By engaging with a particular meditation practice you learn the patterns and habits of your mind, and the practice offers a means to cultivate new, more positive ways of being. With regular work and patience, these nourishing, focused states of mind can deepen into profoundly peaceful and energized states of mind. Such experiences can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.
