i don't have mastitis. just sore and cracked nipples. boy, do they hurt. i've been going to LLL meetings, everything has been great for nursing until last month. i don't know what happened but my baby has turned into a shark! i've nursed him completly until now. i am ready to wean him. he's my 4th baby. i've nursed all of them before until they turn 1. but this one is so close to being one i am ready to give up. i'm done! it hurts. he should be fine now. i just need to figure out how i'm going to do the formula thing. thanks so much for all the great answers. great ideas!

Just feed him whatever he will eat. If someone tells you 4oz's that may not be enough for him so just let him decide!

Can I suggest that you give him goat's milk instead of formula, it is much less likely to cause problems. You can get it, sometimes, at the grocery store or at Wal-Mart. It is also available in a powder.
Here is some info on goat's milk instead of formula, a recipe for goat's milk formula and at the top of the page is an ad for the company that makes the powdered goat's milk: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/3/t032400.asp
Otherwise I have heard two schools of thought 1 is 2.5-3 oz of formula for each lbs of body weight. But SERIOUSLY my baby (9 months) is 26 lbs, there is no way I make 75 oz of breastmilk, is there? The other thing I have heard is 20-32oz per day.
I do have some other suggestions. 1) Have you seen a lactation consultant or contacted La Leche League? 2) Have you tried a nipple shield? These are available at *some* pharmacies (they can be hard to find. It is a silicone nipple that goes over your nipple. There is some concern they can reduce your upply, but at 11 months this is less of a concern. 3) I can hand express faster than I can pump, maybe try that.
Best of Luck! (oh and if the crack doen't seem to try polysporin, worked for me)

Usually an 11 month old can polish of near 6- 8 oz's at a feeding. Your little guy will let you know how much he wants, and how often. It depends on how much solids are in his diet too.
Its probably easier, until you get the hang of how much he's eating, if you get the liquid cans of formula, just because its easier than going abck and measuring everything out again and mixing it up half way through a feeding because he's still hungry. Then you can write down how much and when he's feeding.

Pump out and see how much comes out. Don't quit cold turkey or you'll get serious mastitus..which it sounds like you already have. The only way to get rid of the conditiont is to continue pumping and go on antibiotics. You have to open the duct back up or it will get worse. Talk to your OBGYN about your breasts, hopefully he/she isn't on vacation as well. In the mean time, how does your son take bottles or cups? You might want to be more gradual with the process despite feeling like you want to immedaitely quit. The other thing is that at one year, one month away, your baby can start drinking regular milk. He/she eats table foods and breastmilk/formula is no longer that important. I'd say take the next month to to gradually wean your son off the breast. It will be easier for both of you rather then introducing formula for a month and then re-introducing milk.It will be better for your breasts as well.

i use NAN formula2 u just give them as much as they want if your not doing anything in the day but if your going shopping or sumthing and u want him to go to sleep fill him right up so he will go. but if u want him awake give him some custard or baby food and then about 180ml of bottle just as much as he want don't force it. making it is easy every milk spoon comes with a ratio this formula is 1 spoon to 30ml of water. it's easy i'm 14 and i can do this i look after my baby brother all the time.

Try pumping and give it to him that way.But if you want formual try a 8 oz bottle and see if he takes all of it or if he wants more. My kids both would take more than that at 11 mo. I went from bottles to Big Macs It seams like.

at that age he will probably take more than 8oz. in a feeding. just feed him when he is hungry. some kids won't take from a bottle after the breast, if you have problems try a sippy cup that doesn't flow freely they work great. and you may have to work with him to get him to take formula. enfamil is a good brand.

when he gives you the hungry cry, give him some formula. You did good to go this long, I couldn't do it for 2 months.

try expressing your breast milk to milk bottle and feed him.
He is growing teeth and gum itches. He will tend to bite more.
