Look at the numbers spent by the government on male health versus female health in this country. The numbers are MANY TIMES what men receive (almost nothing is spent on researching prostate cancer, for instance, despite the fact that over 1 on 6 men will suffer prostate complications sometime in their life). In other countries where this gap doesn't exist, life expectancies are much closer.
There's also what the first poster pointed out: men work more dangerous jobs. They're MUCH likely to suffer a fatal accident, be killed on the job, or have health complications. 92% of job fatalities are men, and 24 of the 25 "Worst Jobs in America" are held almost exclusively by men ("dancer" being the only exception, and it's still close to 50/50).
In a nutshell, western society considers men expendable and not worth spending money on.

There are many reasons, but remember, accidents are not the number one cause of death. Men die of heart disease and cancer (as do most women). There are many reasons: men die more at every age, including embryonic. There are more boys than girls until early adulthood, where the numbers even out. At early ages, boys tend to be more susceptible to genetic disease and accident. At later ages, men tend to have poorer eating habits, exercise habits, and engage in fewer preventative behaviors (wearing sunscreen, quitting smoking, less drinking, etc). Most men make it past the ages of 18-24, where accidents cause the most deaths, and die of diseases that are often a combination of genetics and lifestyle like heart attack, stroke and cancer. Women die of the same things, just in smaller numbers, and tend to have healthier lifestyles.

I look at the things my husband does, works all day , comes home putters around the house, which I also do, however, his daily activity is much more physically strenuous. He does the bull work of the household chores, moving furniture, mowing, building things etc. There is a more physical strain on his body and heart on a daily basis.

its because women have an easy life compared to men. also most of the life threatening jobs such as millitary, firemen, police, construction sites etc are almost enitrely taken by males. This is also true in the case of slow-death jobs such as refineries, engine rooms and such, prolonged exposure to which reduces life expectancy.
to add to all this, there are medical reasons that allow women to have more fat in body etc., which has become a boon in the modern life. In the forest life.
