Hmm... it appears most of the responders here did not realize I was making a tongue in check comment. Oh wait, I think I meant to say "tongue in cheek". Ah, whatever. Anyway, to get to my point:

I'm becoming convinced that the spell check and grammar check software tools, which appear to be standard now with every PC, are bad educationally. For example, my daughter is a college freshman now, and she is having some trouble in her English composition class because she doesn't write her in-class essays on a computer. Naturally, in high school she used spell check and grammar check for everything she wrote, and as a result her proofreading skills are blatantly deficient.

I swear... if your kid is relying on the computer to do all the proofreading, disable MS Word and make your kid use Word Pad. Those frickin' software tools are only dumbing down America's youth.

For many reasons. First of all, computers use Spell Check based on a specific dictionary . Yahoo in some areas uses a specific dictionary and some websites or programs based theirs on another.

You will notice there are differences in UK and USA spellings such as colour ( UK) and color (USA). Therefore, if you are in a school or university using one of the above country's curriculum, you would be expected to use their specific spellings.

Since websites might be based on one specific dictionary, you might not find some given words in some stricter dictionaries. It depends on the team of language experts who put the book together.

Also, if you want to write on a particular subject that may involve technical terms such as scientific or medical words, then the Spell Check might not have those words available, you therefore; have to search for the right spellings. If you want to effectively get your view across, then you have to make an effort to know how to spell or even search for the right spelling.

Most times it is for grammar. What happens is this, you might spell a word right but the word does not fit in the sentence spell check will not pick up on that error. Example you want to you use the word from and you type in form, spell check will not pick up that. It is also important if you are writing essays for school.

You have spell CHECK, not cheek. That is exactly why you need to know how to spell. Spell check only looks to see if the word you typed IS a word. It has no brain to tell it if the word you typed is accurate for the context of the sentence.

creek, creak; boar, bore; sore, soar; desert, dessert; bear, bare; pain, pane...........get the picture? Your word could be spelled correctly, but be completely wrong. Only you will know for sure what you are trying to say, and if you can't spell, you'll likely wind up with nonsensical sentences....like spell cheek vs spell check (have to assume you were playing with us with that one!).

I'm sorry Zanti3, but I have to laugh. Read what you wrote, then you'll understand why knowing how to spell is so important.

The computer is not perfect and technically your question is spelled correctly. It is check, not cheek.
