People vote in secret to prevent the fear of their being punished for their decision. It is a good rule. Expecially today, when people are repeatedly called unpatriotic if they oppose the administration.

Politicians vote openly, because, they are all public issues. Voting should be secret, so that the sanctity of voting is preserved. Some times it may lead to fights also, as you said, the people in the opposite party may attack you.
why should one be ashamed of his choice, if he thinks the person whom he voted is suitable for the post.

Why do you want to know how people vote? Do you think that would make a difference in the elections? I personally don't care if people know how I vote. I pretty much tell everyone anyway how I feel about political issues and politicians. However, voting is a right, and we have the right to privacy.
Why do you care?

Jeez, what planet have YOU been living on? It was to prevent EXACTLY the sort of abuses you name that the Founding Fathers decided our votes should be cast in secret. And if you think politicians openly vote on all issues, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya! Or maybe you'd be more interested in an oceanfront condo in Tucson, Arizona...c'mere friend...lemme show ya some more really good deals...

it's to prevent intimidation and bribery... gosh.. what do you care anyway... I don't care.. I will tell anyone that asks me who I voted for... I'm proud of my vote.. but some people do care, that is why they have those partitions on the side.. to keep it a secret ballot... it's your right to tell someone and it's your right not to tell someone.. it is your decision.. I could care less who someone votes for... why do you?

In a free and fair election one should have privacy in this matter.
If you want to open yourself to retaliation from office holders, this could create the conditions where that can happen.,
