Definitions of game programmer on the Web:
* A game programmer is a software engineer who primarily develops computer or video games or related software (such as game development tools). Game programming has many specialized disciplines; practitioners of any may regard themselves as "game programmers". A game programmer should not be confused with a game designer; many designers are also programmers, but not all are, and it is rare for one person to serve both roles in modern professional games.

I would recommend checking things out on the internet, and trying to design your own games (simple as they may be). You can use these as a portfolio if you go on an interview. Python is useful for scripting video games, see if you can find a game that uses Python and script some add ons for it. This is great practice for getting familiar with how things work. One way game companies will notice you is if you create something neat and post it on the internet. Some novelty game you make, or some game design tool, or maybe even something cutting edge. I would not recommend starting a company, video games require intense capital to get started. In all honesty, you don't want to be involved in the money aspect of games, all the money you should be concerned with is your paycheck.
