In the UK, it's easy to withhold a number when you call someone from a mobile. Is it possible to withhold your number when texting too? (or to spoof to appear as if it came from a different number?)

I see the wierdo potential - no I am not! lol. I have been playing a game with my gf (who fancies Ross Kemp) and I want to send her a text at xmas pretending it's from him.

I don't think so. If you really want to do that, you could buy a cheap mobile phone (£15-20) on pay as you go, pay with cash, don't register it. At some shops, they insist you give your details "for the guarantee". Cobblers, go to Argos. The phone and number will then be not traceable to you.

However, the service provider would still be able to locate the geographical position of the phone when it is switched on.

No, if you send a text your number always shows and if you wanted to use a different number you might be able to do it with a new sim card.

You can send it using the website www.cardboardfish.com - it sends the text with the website name rather than a number so anyone could have sent it xxxx
