I intend to see a doctor to rule out heart, blood, or thyroid diseases, so don't sweat me about it. I think it's a combination of anxiety and just being out of shape.

I've learned how to slow my breathing and relax my muscles so I don't get full fledged panic attacks and rapid palpitations, but I am plagued with a sense of impending doom and I can feel my heart beating as if I did something strenuous. This happens when I try to relax, but not ever triggered by exertion. This has been going on for about 2 years now. Does anyone have the same thing when trying to relax?

Good that you are seeing a doctor. But what you describe sounds more like a panic attack than a physical problem. Your doctor can give you medication to stop the symptoms. Meditation, relaxation and breathing methods really help. All the best and Merry Christmas!

This happened to me when I first had my panic attacks in 2000. I was sleeping so peacefully and woke up to my heart racing out of my chest. Took me a while to fully relax. I talked to my mom and she said those are panic attacks. It was triggered due to having ecclampsia after coming home from giving birth. Took a couple of years to actually sleep through the night without waking. In that time they had me on pills to help me sleep. After none of that worked I decided to just not take them anymore. Been panic free in sleep for a couple of years now. Mainly stress is the factor that activates anxieties. Learn to control the stress, and you will sleep easy too. Walk at least 5 minutes a day too.

I think you are stressed out, because of your job, your money, your girl fried/wife, or lack or one or more of them. When you "relax" all these thought bombard and fill your brain, resulting in almost a panic attack. You need something to calm you down. See a psychiatrist.

You did not say how old you are. If you under 50, a heart attack is unlikely.

you have some of the classic symptoms of relaxation induced panic disorder--doing relaxation exercises might make it worse. what i suggest you do is read a book called "Don't Panic" by R. Reid Wilson. It will give you some good exercises on tension-relaxation techniques and cognitive techniques as well. My dissertation topic was on just this disorder. you also need to learn how to bring panic on and then let it go--this teaches your body not to fear the panic itself, which is a key to overcoming the 'fear of the fear.' last resort is medication, but they work and should be considered only if necessary, which i believe will not be.
