Abigail has just been standing and looking a bit depressed. Though she will eat some things she likes (mealworms, sesame seeds) she seems to have lost interest in layers pellets (her crop feels quite empty). Her droppings are loose and yellowy but as she isn't eating much there isn't much of them. She has been tried with yoghurt but doesn't like it much. She hasn't been sneezing. Her Eglu mate has recently moulted and is quite perky. Abigail is showing no sign of moulting. Both have stopped laying and have slightly floppy combs. They are about two and a half years old. The weather is very cold lately.

Hmmm in some parts of this town I am know as the chicken lady and I am familiar with loss of appitite in fowl occuring due to a vitamin deficiency, mostly iron deficiency. You should be able to get a suitable vitamin additive for the chicken's water at the local farm or feed and seed store. Try to get one that has a full range of vitamins instead of just iron though, since we are unsure what might be the ailment. In any case, it can't hurt.

Did she receive the bird flu vaccination a while back? Yes or no, let a doctor know that she is sick. Also, move both birds indoors for emergency warmth. If Abigail is getting sick, being cold will make it much harder for her to get well. She may just need some warmth and rest. If you have a veterinarian, have him or her examine her. Good luck.

Ok, I raise chickens to show in 4-H. We have sixty of them. Thing one - hopefully bring Abigail in the house. This will help all around. Thing two - get water in her system. Dip her beak in water and then let go while she raises her head and swallow. This is the number one thing for every sick chicken. Wait - about the house thing - If it is around 35 - 40 degree farenhite or LOWER, then bring her in the house. If it is above- just let her sit in the corner of the chicken coop. Chickens just need to let it pass through there system. And I'm sorry to tell you, most likely a vet will be of no help because they have to be a special kind of chicken vet to help. Chickens get so many diseases it is almost impossible to diagnose them. Hope she gets better, but she may die. Then I hope your other birds don't!

It sounds like you know all the things to check out and it's time to call your vet. birds can have things you can't see (which i'm sure you know) so better safe than sorry call and make an appt. Hopefully there is a vet in your area that takes birds. I would take both in just in case too. good luck!!

if they are hybrids then they will be coming to the end of their life anyway. I would take her to a vet to see if a course of antibiotics might help. When were they last wormed?
