It can harm the fish, but it's also harmless if you handle it right. Your hands should be clean and wet, you need to hold it firmly enough that it won't flip out, yet not enough to squeeze and injure it. Really you should only be attempting to do this if you absolutely must, expecially if you haven't attempted it before.

Well yes, ofcourse but it also depends for how long. In any case picking up a fish and taking it out of the water will certainly harm it. First of all the fish has to cope with the shock of being handled, then the fish will suffocate for a few moments. Also the fish could have some serious harm done to its fins and scales, etc.
All in all its not such a hot idea to pick up a fish.

A fish has a slime coating that is rubbed off when you handle them.
Your skin also contains salts.
Yes it does hard a fish to pick it up but I wouldn't say it harms it anymore then a net if your hands are clean.

That would be a yes. Fish have a protective film to combat parasites and other water born desease. Handling a fish removes the film and the gills suffer by drying out being exposed to air.

it definitely might, fish are so delicate they have a very delicate coating that drys fast when out of water, so i wouldn't advise picking your fish up. if you have to, you should get a fish net to make sure you handle your fish safely & always wash you hands. home kept fish are greatly increased in the risk of becoming sick. because home kept fish live in such clean conditions, the smallest infection of sudden bacteria could be harmful to it.

yes, there is a great chance of harming a fish if you pick it up with hand or net! when you pick it up with your hand it rubs off its protective coat on its scales! when you pick the fish up with a net you run a great chance of damaging gills and scales! so in other words try to refrain from picking up fish!!

Yes, but usually not irrepairable. You don't want to do this any more than absolutely necessary. You can damage the coating on the fish, the scales, the gills. Also, it struggles so when you hold it. The stress is tremendous.

Yes it is harmful to pick up fish. They have a protective film on their bodies that helps them fight disease. When you touch them you compromise this film.

not unless you have really dirty hands. i think the biggest concern here is, since fish are rather slippery, what if it slips out of your hands and falls down somewhere? with fish being rather small, a 1 foot long fish falling from your eye level, call it 5 feet, is the same like you falling off of 25 feet of height. and don't forget - fish also need water to breathe, so don't hold it for a long time.

only if you squeeze it to death, picking a fish up shouldn't hurt at all. The only thing that would happen would be that it lost it's breath.
