Actually food, cuddling, sleep, a diaper change, warm clothes, toys, but most important mom's warmth, tender loving care, TLC. An infant unhappy, you have to smile lots infront of your infant, thats the only way they will learn how to smile and be happy, by watching your emotions, you show them that you are always happy, smilling around them and I can guarante they will start smilling and being happy....father figure..

A full tummy with out an air bubble in it, a clean diaper, a little movement (rocking, walking) a soft, warm place to sleep, an occasional interaction with something brightly colored and a whole lot of love!

(I type this as I hold my sleeping 5 week old who has just finished nursing and been burped and is now being rocked)

"A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and the security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three." - Dr. Grantly Dick-Read

Food - mine smiles every time he eats; "swimming" - I bathe hime in a big tub, supporting his head and back and he "swims" back and forth - seems to enjoy it a lot; toys - like mobile on early stages and more elaborated later on; being warm, dry and clean is essential; lots of communication - knowing he'd loved and that he's not alone. Just what makes everybody happy - basic needs satisfied and attention.

(This is your very first question here on Yahoo Answers! I like to see questions like this chosen to be the FIRST thing we ask about. This is a very noble question. My own first question, on the other hand, was about green blobs falling from outer space. Very embarrassing.) You have a page of great answers here. I might add as an old nurse, RHYTHM. Rocking, patting, swaying, humming all in soft beat like your heartbeat . . .lub dub. Lub dub. Babies like that.

Nursing
Going out side
Snuggling

Depends on the baby, some like noise, some like quiet. Some like rocking, some like bouncing. In fact there are even some babies who can not tolerate snuggling, I can't even imagine!

food, cuddling, sleep, a diaper change, warm clothes, toys, just talking to them...and the list goes on. It depends on what the baby is UNhappy about.

Each baby is born with his own personality; he'll let you know from birth what he likes and doesn't like. The fun, or frustrating part, is figuring it out! Good luck!

Always check these 3 things first:
are they wet/dirty?
are they hungry?
are they tired?
That usually does it, if they seem upset. But always lots of love, cuddles and kisses.
