Most likely, Alternatives will be created. But a solution could be to look for oil on other planets.

There will be oil around for quite a while yet.
So don't worry about that part.
Just learn how to use less of it for the cost is only going to go up.
Oil is still cheaper than most alternatives.
As the price of oil goes up, alternative fuels will come in to use.
Just get into the habit of using energy wisely.
It's as simple as not leaving your computer or unneeded lights on.
Don't try to have it 80 degrees in the winter & 60 degrees in the summer in you home. Just turn that around.
Take public transportation more.
Walk or take a bike.
Make all the trips you take in a car count (do as many tasks as you can in one trip)
Choose your clothes more wisely so you enjoy wearing them longer. Don't be afraid to hand down things or to wear hand me downs.
Buy & cook only as much food as you need so as not to waste so much.
Just watch what you are throwing away. It will show you how waste full you are.

A very clever man invented a car that ran on water being converted to hydrogen along time ago but the oil companies bought his idea for millions as soon as they heard it or they would have lost MEGA millions. It is a simple system that is extremely efficient to run.
Synthetic oils can be used for lubricated parts.
Neuclear power plants reduce the need for oils & coal to be burnt to produce power.
Gas heating is cleaner than oil heaters.
I could give you alternatives all night though this should show you that man will not have any difficulties replacing the oil resource should it run out.
We have gone too far forward to even consider going backwards now.
Hope this helps.

Fuel from fossils are needed for manufacturing, heating, and in many raw materials. So IF we did run out, it would have consequences far beyond just riding a bike to work. In general, we would have chaos.
I believe the bigger threat to be from the power grid shutting down for lengthly period (Read source below), because it could prevent fuel pumps and banks to work; a truly huge disaster.
As for running out of fuel, I don't think that will happen any time soon. If it ever got close, we would start drilling in places we have not wanted to (Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, etc).
At a cost of unknown lives, we, humanity, will always find a way.

I think it will be great when everyone needs a bike or legs to get to work.
I would love to see a shift in society that makes people think about things
that we all take for granted. I think that in many ways we were happier when
things were simple. Families were closer. People were less money
oriented. More people worked the land. Our values were better. Children
did not have so much stuff but had more parental input. I think running out
of fuel might be the best thing that could happen to the human race.

Alternatives already exist. The big oil companies that are in cahoots with the big three are inhibiting this technology for their own greed. Government has to lead the way to allow this technology to become mainstream. Unfortunately wherever you guy the majority of politicians are only interested in their own agenda$. We are all going to have to start dying of breathing problems before anything is done. It's time for a revolution on the way our leaders think. God bless us, everyone.

Nah, as always, when we NEED something we find a way. Necessity is the mother of invention. However, we should have been thinking about this long ago. (I really don't think we're running low on fuel, YET)

Alternative, renewable energy sources are all around us. In a case of desperation people will start exploiting them for themselves rather than waiting for commercial companies to exploit them for us and consequently us with them.
