I've heard it's a condition called hematoma caused by improper blood insertion and that such an insertion can also cause permanent nerve damage. Is that true?
Should I notify my physician and when?

Your right in that it's called a hematoma. A hematoma means a bruise. It happens whenever you have some bleeding under the skin. Put cold compresses on it, and that will help it to shrink, and heal faster. Also putting a pressure dressing on it will help the body to absorb it faster, and keep it from getting bigger. It is very rare when it causes nerve damage. If you should have numbness in your fingers or hand, or your hand becomes very cold too the touch, then you should call your Dr. immediately. Otherwise, it will heal over time without any problems.

I draw blood for a living and you are fine. You didn't put pressure on the spot after the blood draw and blood leaked out of the vein into the tissue. A Hematoma is a bruise. Put an ice pack on it if it hurts. It will go away in a couple days. Next time hols pressure on the draw site until you have stopped bleeding.
Nerve damage is a very rare case in blood drawing.

I have my blood drawn monthly, you can not use that arm for 1 hour to carry anything with weight such as a purse, groceries etc. bruising will occur from the weight pull on the puncture sight.
My phlebotomist has warned me every time, and when I don't listen I bruise.

Hematoma is characterizied by the skin rising, and the area being extremely painful. Brusing under the skin with the skin in normal flat position (no rising) is normal after a blood draw. When you have a hematoma: it looks like a baby tomato or an egg is under the skin. it looks very wierd, and believe me...if you had it you would go in, because it looks so strange.

Bruising is normal. There was just a bit of internal bleeding in the area but it usually stops.

If you develop a lump that is hard thats not usually good and you would want to notify your physician then.

Sometimes you bruise after having your blood drawn because the person who drew it didn't wait until you stopped bleeding before sending you on your way.
If you have any worries call you doctor.

its normal to bruse a little after having blood drawn, put an ice back on it or a cool cloth and try to take it easy and not use it too much the nect couple days, if its not gone by this time next week then you might want to talk to your doctor.

not to worry , all it is,is blood that might have leaked to the outer side of the vain. That's really what a bruise is.
You can put an ice pack to cut the bruising down.

I really wouldn't worry, sometimes we bruise after they draw blood from your arm, and it will fade away in times.
