First, do your basic research at Apple.com to get up-to-speed on features, new models, and basic pricing structures.

Next, hit wholesalers and auctions to zero in on a deal you can love on the models you're most interested in.

My first choice for shopping research is MegaGoods.com for selection and price, and they have many ipods in stock.

For a tighter budget, a factory refurbished unit can cost half or less than a new retail piece, and still comes with a factory warranty and a new accessories kit.
You ever see someone rip open a package at Walmart, just to look (or smell?) inside?
Many of those units (especially high-end gadgets) are sold as refurbs...and the same happens at places like BestBuy and Circuit City.

Many refurbs are store demos, packaging damage in shipping, etc., and are still brand new, but the retailer must return them to the factory for a credit (because that ripped box will sit on the shelf forever) where they get a full quality-check and re-packaging...Even though the unit is new, the law prohibits the manufacturer from selling them as new, and they're wholesaled to outlets as "factory refurbished".
They are (in most cases) shipped in factory cartons, with all the manuals and required extras.
The best place to look for ipod refurbs is RefurbDepot.com although a Yahoo search for "refurbished ipods" will turn up many competitors...As will a search for "new ipods cheap".

If all you want is music, and lots of it, then you're sticking to the 20Gig or less group because video is added at 30Gigs and up.

* A 20Gig ipod will hold up to about 5,000 songs on average:
1Gig is One Billion bytes, and a Meg is One Million bytes...

Music files come in a few popular formats, with MP3 still at the top...
An MP3 file averages about 4Megs, depending on the length and quality of the conversion.

...so when shopping for a model, a general rule of thumb would be that you can fill the ipod with about 250 songs per Gig of space.

to buy i suggest going to Best Buy (if you are in the U.S.). There you can also purchase a 2-yr replacement plan, which WILL come in handy in case something happens...

To me, it's always best to buy a new one because you never know what the previous owner did to it.
