Easiest way, without pen and paper:
15 7/8 is close to 16 Using this number, I'm over by 1/8"
Half of my chosen number is 8"
Half of the amount I'm over is 1/16".
I know my total must be less than 8"
Therefore 8 - 1/16" = 7 15/16"
OR - old school math:
15 7/8"
Half of 15 is . . . 7 8/16"
Half of 7/8 = 14/16 X 1/2 = 7/16"
TOTAL = 7 8/16" + 7/16: == 7 15/16"
Although the math is relatively easy, many of us need to shake out some cobwebs to remember how to deal with fractions.
Now, hold that tape measure with confidence and . . . onward with this--then--future tasks.

here is a tip for dividing any number in half or a board. First hook a tape measure on the end of a piece of wood,make sure you measure from the same side. If you put the top of the tape on measure from the top. put the tape at an angle so that you can mark an even number lets say you marked 20 inches then you mark half of 20 which is 10 then measure to the ten inch mark straight across and this will give you your half.
Good Luck
