OK seriously I don't think I saw one correct answer to this question.

A tortoise is a type of land turtle. There are three types of turtle, land, water and sea. Although all tortoises are turtles not all turtles are tortoises. There are land turtles (box turtle for example) that aren't tortoises.

A tortoise will have the typical land turtle characteristics a larger more domed shell and land/unwebbed feet.

I don't know of a real difference between a tortoise and other land turtles but water turtles have webbed feet and a flatter shell and sea turtles have flippers and a flatter shell too.

Some turtle live on land and sea. Tortoises have larger shells and they tend to move slower than a turtle. A tortoise is usually larger than a turtle.

Hope this helps a little ^_^

The tortoise was once in a race with the hare. The turtle wasn't. Therefore, the tortoise is something of a celebrity and is a status symbol among creatures that inch along.

To my knowledge, tortoises are much bigger, and live for over a hundred years. They stay on land, while turtles stay in water.

I believe the turtle is an aquatic animal and has webbed-like feet.
A tortoise has huge feet and are rough and dry to the touch looking more like an elephant's trunk.
