London, ENGLAND-based, Alternative-Rock trio Placebo was formed in 1994 by American-born singer+guitarist Brian Molko and Swedish bassist Stefan Olsdal; later, that year, drummer Robert Schultzberg was drafted in to complete the line-up.
The threesome made their debut in late 1995 with an independent single entitled "Bruise Pristine"; it was followed the next year by the first, self-titled, album wich included the single "Nancy Boy", it reached the #4 on The Official U.K. chart and also gained them a high-profile support slots for U2 and Weezer.
In 1997 Steve Hewitt replaced Schultzberg on drums; not long after David Bowie invited the group to play at his 50th birthday bash at New York's Madison Square Garden.
At the beginning of 1998 Placebo started work on its second album, "Without You I'm Nothing" was finally issued in October on Virgin Records; the first single, "Pure Morning", peaked at #4 in U.K. and broke the top 20 of The Modern Rock Tracks chart in the States where the album cracked the top 20 of the Billboard's Top Heatseekers list; the second single off of the CD, "You Don't Care About Us", also enjoyed chart success in Britain peaking at #5.
Two years later the trio issued "Black Market Music", it was preceded by the moderate hit single "Taste In Men", but the album didn't gain the praise compared to the band's previous effort.
The three-piece band resurfaced in the spring of 2003 with "Sleeping With Ghosts", their fourth album rose to the #11 spot in the U.K. Pop Albums chart; the main single track "The Bitter End" was a huge hit all over Europe, in the British chart peaked at #10, it was followed by two more U.K. top 30 hits: "Special Needs" and "This Picture"; the album eventually hit #18 on American Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart.
In late 2004, Placebo assembled a collection titled "Once More With Feeling: Singles 1996-2004" which soared to the #8 in Britain and featured two previously unreleased songs; "Twenty Years", released as a single, climbed into the top 10 of the U.K. Official Pop chart.
In March 2006, the trio released its fifth album of new material, "Meds"; the 13-track set includes the British single "Because I Want You" and the first single worldwide, excluding U.K. "Song To Say Goodbye".

Born to an American international banker father and a Scottish mother, the Molko family moved frequently during his childhood, including spells in Scotland, Liberia, Lebanon and Luxembourg. Molko has referred to his mother's home town of Dundee, Scotland as "where I grew up".[1]. In 1990, he attended Goldsmiths College in London, where he studied drama. He describes his childhood as a period when he felt very lonely and alienated. He started to wear make-up at the age of 11. He was an actor in a school drama theater.

While Molko was brought up in a strict household that disapproved of artistic expression (his father wanted him to become a banker) he rebelled by affecting an androgynous image, wearing nail polish, lipstick and eyeliner, and listening to punk and glam rock. In his late teens, he came out as bisexual.

Molko and Stefan Olsdal both attended The European School Of Luxembourg in Luxembourg, but they were never friends. When Molko moved to London to study drama at Goldsmiths College, where he graduated with a degree, he met Olsdal at South Kensington Tube Station. Molko invited Olsdal to one of his gigs in a club, which he played with Steve Hewitt. Olsdal was impressed with Molko's voice, and together they formed Ashtray Heart; eventually they changed the name to Placebo. Together with drummer Robert Schultzberg (a friend of Olsdal's from Sweden) performed together in 1996. Schultzberg did not fit in the band, however, and was soon replaced with Steve Hewitt, who played on Placebo's demo tracks.

Molko's musical influences include Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joy Division and The Pixies. Molko taught himself to play guitar. At the age of 16 he got a fake Telecaster as a present from his parents. He soon bought a real guitar, with actual strings. He plays other instruments such as bass, harmonica, keyboard, saxophone, drums and turntables. Occasionally, Molko works as a disc jockey at clubs, but he admits he's not very good at it. Nowadays Molko listens to Peaches, Ladytron, At the Drive-In, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. He likes to experiment with electronic sounds.

Along with Hewitt and Olsdal, he had a small role in the 1998 film Velvet Goldmine, for which Placebo performed the T. Rex song "20th Century Boy." He played Malcolm, a singer of the fictional glam rock band, "The Flaming Creatures."

In 2005, Molko's long-term partner, Helena Berg, gave birth to his first child, Cody. He said he named the child after his long-time friend who died in a car accident.
