it is about the language used and how over the years people have been over identified by a particular disorder. the major concern was with early identification and diagnosis of this disorder a person who is 18 years old is immediately placed into a category that many people see as untreatable and destine for certain negative outcomes. This new diagnostic classification was in the hopes of creating some space between the opposite ends of a spectrum such as in the case with Autism spectrum

First and foremost, if you even suspect this is true, make the quickest and safest exit you possibly can from this situation. But sadly for many, if they had the capacity to follow that, they would have never gotten into the situation to begin with. But from a purely academic perspective, there are a few indicators which serve well as warnings. 1. Pathological lying. The inability to differentiate between reality and a fixated desire. 2. A complete inability to be empathic of the needs and emotions of others. 3. A persistent belligerent and abusive assault on any who disagree with them. 4. A predefined description of another's existence from which departure is not allowed. There are more, but these are enough for any sensible person to act upon. But as I said above, if a person ignored (denied) the signals of behavior when entering the relationship, chances are small they will overcome that denial and free themselves from it. I've already had one close friend murdered by her child's father, being fully aware of the violence that person was capable of, and had clearly demonstrated. Now, I realize there is nothing that anyone can do for another to enlighten them. A person is either committed to truthfulness, or they're not. If you're not committed to truthfulness, you won't require it from those around you either. More often than not, we are deceived because we choose to be. The unrealistic belief in another's ability to change, is the primary reason why you choose to get into the relationship to begin with. That is the first step of denial, and typically fatal. The psychopaths and sociopaths were feeling unnecessarily stigmatized. They wanted to be diagnosed as "Religious Right Republicans", but moderate Republicans objected, so the compromise as Anti-social Personality Disorder. Although, I do think that sociopath is perhaps more descriptive than psychopath.

Political correctness and people first language.
Besides, 'psychopath' and 'sociopath' have developed an incredible stigma. Even being labeled on or the other would freak out the person diagnosed.

psychology and human behaviour terms and definitions are able to change, as in the case of manic/depressive now becomes bipolar. a sociopath and a pscyhopath differ in that the psychopath is generally more dangerous to society as per violence. there are many sub classes of both and pathologies can overlap.

Because each time it happens, the person responsible is promoted in their job and publishes a book on the subject and gets lots of cash. Then they appear on a tv show, etc, etc. Two years later, it's someone else with ' Socio-psychotic conscience-free alternative behaviour syndrome' or some such twaddle. Probably better to call a spade a spade - 'very dangerous nutcase.'

It keeps the academics in a job to redefine things now and again. What else are they to do with all these people with degrees that only have the intelligence to ponder on things that are within the box? They don't want to lose those now do they?

Just tell the truth, these people are mentally deficient and maybe dangerous.
If that hurts them, then so be it, thats the way it is.
Why make problems where there arent any.
Forget P.C. and be truthful would go a long way to making things better.

i'm sorry that people who don't know the answer to your question feel the need to spew venomous remarks about people who are involved in the study of psycoligy.but there is a study in itself i guess.
i don't honestly know why they changed it,but lets hope that it was for the good of the people who are diagnosed with it.i would hope that people like you would post a question like this to gain knoledge that would be a benifit to the study of the human condition.good luck
