If one would listen to music as individual musicians, one might just hear the difference. So many people listen to singing, the lyrics, but don't pay attention to what the band is doing...Bass guitar is the rhythm part that goes with the drums. They are like one together.. The rhythm guitar plays chords with a rhythm, sometimes an alternate rhythm from the rest of the song. The main guitar or lead, is mostly a combination of rhythm and lead guitar in where one takes on a single mono note line that is separate from the rest of the song. (Not necessarily a monophonic line, just an easier way of explaining it.) Hope this helps..
