Moss grows on the north sides of trees.
The southern branches of trees are often more lateral than northern.
The sun rises in the east, and tracks via south to set in the west. You can use the hands on a watch as a fairly accurate compass.
All of this is for the northern hemisphere, of course.

Do what the Phoenicians did five thousand years ago. Learn what the constellations of the Zodiac look like. At night you can see up to six of them, and they form a huge arc from one side of the horizon to the other. It is a different six at different times of night, and at different seasons of the year, but ignore which six and concentrate on picking out the huge arc.
THE ARC OF THE ZODIAC MEETS THE HORIZON AT EAST AND WEST.
Actually it's drifted a little bit in five thousand years, but originally it was spot on. It's a LOT better than the "Pole Star" thing.

if lost in the woods (HAPPENED ONCE WHILE MUSHROOM HUNTING) listen for traffic noises, sirens etc. if i was in the wilderness, i think watch the animals and see where they go for water and follow them ., then hopefully follow the stream, river, to a road.
