how can the issues adressed by the UN have more weight and effectiveness? What is an alternative?

Muse: Maybe there has been no 'global' conflict since WWII but 'regional' conflicts have affected the whole world.
If the UN is 'a forum for international discussion' then why did my uncle have to see active service with their blue beret in the old Yugoslavia? As it is, he never got over what he saw there. He killed himself two years ago.

Oh, and it's not my premise. Note the quotes :-)

U.N. USELESS NITWITS, are you talking about what I am
thinking ? More like a circus to me. To be effective, they should
have well trained troops, no nationalities, only U.N. passports.
loyal to the United Nations, disregard all religions and creeds
like the foreign legionaires. The troopers should have enough
firepower to put an end to any conflict and they must be obeyed
by every nation. I know I am dreaming, but it is a good dream,
what's wrong with dreaming anyway.

Your premise is wrong from the start.
The United Nations was organized to stop worldwide conflicts on the scale of the second World War. It has accomplished that goal with great success.
The forum of the U.N. allows international review of military buildup by nations, assessment of the global danger of such buildups, and an instant forum to create alliances to stop threats to global peace.
People are confused as to what the United Nations actually is. It is a forum for international discussion. It is not a global governing body, as most people seem to think.
Since no global conflict has erupted since WWII, even thought there has been several opportunities, the forum of the U.N. has been a positive influence on international relations.

To answer this question look where the money goes and who heads the different departments. All you can see is corruption from top to bottom. One of the easiest thinks that the UN could do is spend money on clean water in areas of the world that have children dying of diarrhea. Clean water and soap just are not sexy to the guru's running the UN. An example of how the UN fails is the sex scandal of UN soldiers and workers in central Africa, Koffa and Iraq oil for food scandal, and tin horn leader blaming the USA for every thing they are doing wrong.

The UN, a spinoff from the old League of Nations, is an attempt at world government by uniting nations together for a common interest, whether it be peace, war, economics, or whatever. It DOESN'T work because simply put everyone and, every nation is looking out for number one. This is why any attempt at forming a world government will fail, HUMAN GREED. This is why the so called New World Order will fall flat on it's face also. Plain and simple reasoning.

US has helped make UN ineffective. UN needs to remove US (and other powers) veto on security council and ignore US objections to an interantional court.

they also need a standing army that can enforce international human rights and humanitarian law.

not quite an alternative, but i'd like to see a Global Parliament, made up of people rather than govts' representatives.

Remove the U.N. in its entirety from the U.S.! Let Hugo Chavez foot the bill for the 'lame duck' global governership. Next, the U.N. must back the resolutions it passes. The U.N. was not compiled for face time on the news networks only to commit crimes against the ENTIRE world behind the scenes, (oil for food, resolutions against Iraq, Darfur). Finally, make the U.N. accountable to the world not the world accountable to the U.N.

I think that the UN should disband and they should create more regional organizations....for example, a North American group, a Latin American group, a Southeast Asian group, etc.

I think it's ridiculous that some guy from Malaysia is voting on what the US should do.

the UN is illegitimate and non sovereign and should stay that way

it can only be used as a platform for speeches
