You need to choose your CPU manufacturer first, which will normally be AMD or Intel, then you need to decide on your budget which in turn will decide on which of their processors you can afford.
Once you have chosen a CPU you will know the socket it plugs into and then you can choose a motherboard with a matching socket and the features you want.
Good luck!
get a matching socket

Choose the processor first then buy a corresponding motherboard, you know what motherboard to choose from the socket of the processor, if you have the motherboard then just check the paper work that came with it. Its all ABC stuff.

If you are asking this then it probably isn't a good idea for you to be thinking of building a system even though it is so easy these days. Do a bit more research or better still it is probably cheaper for you to buy pre built

- the socket should have the model imprinted on it, that determines the cpu that fits it
- the manufaturer (website) of the motherboard can also tell you what peripherals fit
