Generally I recommend buying fish to suit your water. Live bears like platy, molly, guppy, and swords love it. Gouramis thrive in it. Check your pH, and kH (hardnes) then look at http://liveaquaria.com for fish that suit your water.

The easiest way to make your water less basic is to mix in distilled water. Keep in mind pure distilled water is really bad for fish. (Note basic water is generally hard, and hard water doesn't easily change pH.) Also keep in mind that fast change in a good direction is very bad. Go slowly.

I assume you mean too high a pH.
Unless your pH is above 7.6 and you want to keep South American Fish, i would not get too concerned with this.
Your kH is more important, even South American fish need calcium, which is supplied in proper kH maintenance (not baking soda).
Back to your question though, here are some suggestions:

*Mango wood is a popular decor that adds acid.

*Peat or even stronger wood be peat pellets

*Almond husk lowers pH

*Oak leaves (Deciduous ), be careful here, the tannins are strong.

*My preferred method is "Bio-Lif", this a safe natural product that also absorbs anaerobic bacteria and is really good for fish such as Arowana.

Well I know NOTHING about fish, but you need to add an acid. Vinegar, lemon juice, cream of tartar these are all common acids found most homes.

Are they safe for fish tanks? No idea.

Maybe this will help:
