The GDR (German "Democratic" Republic) was ruled by the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands = socialist single political party of Germany), so it was a socialist, not communist country, although the difference between socialist and communist is not very clear. After the reunification the PDS (Party of Democratic Socialism) was founded, it was recently renamed into "Die Linke" (the left). Many of the members of this party are former SED members and they get quite high results in elections in East Germany (like 20 % or so).
