well, there are songs that have given me a different perspective of things. like that song by stevie wonder and babyface - 'how come, how long'. it helped me realise that there are people out there who are smart but struggle with their love lives to see past things, and is one of those songs that gives the strength to get passed all that hurt and carry on. and by helping those that go through the same thing, we can help save their life. it also helped me become a better person in caring for those that struggle with their lives, and not to think about myself all the time. here are the lyrics.

There was a girl I used to know
She was oh so beautiful
But she's not here anymore
She had a college degree
Smart as anyone could be
She had so much to live for
But she fell in love
With the wrong kinda man
He abused her love and treated her so bad
There was not enough education in her world
That could save the life of this little girl

How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts
As well as your eyes

She tried to give a cry for help
She even blamed things on herself
But no one came to her aid
Nothing was wrong as far as we could tell
That's what we'd like to tell ourselves
But no, it wasn't that way
So she fell in love
With the wrong kinda man
And she paid with her life
For loving that man
So we cannot ignore,
We must look for the signs
And maybe next time we might save
somebody's life

How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts
As well as your eyes

I on occasion met that guy
It's been a feeling deep inside
Some ... wasn't right
The way he proves himself a man
By beating his woman with his hands
Oh I wish that she'd seen the light
How can someone like that call himself a man
He's not a man
Soon reality ...
And we cannot ignore
Whenever we see the signs
'Cause any kind of abuse
God knows, it's a crime

How come, how long
It's not right, it's so wrong
Do we let it just go on
Turn our backs and carry on
Wake up, for it's too late
Right now, we can't wait
She won't have a second try
Open up your hearts
As well as your eyes

another song that i think is really powerful and brought me a new perspective, as well as taught me not to give up, getting me passed a lot of the hurdles that have come my way, is a song called 'win' by Brian Mcknight. it talks about the times that even when it looks like we could just give up, to pick ourselves up and keep trying again. doing whatever it takes to achieve what you want to achieve, and not backing down until you reach it. i first heard this song in the movie 'men of honor' with cuba gooding jr and robert de niro. in the movie, cuba gooding jr's character wants to be the the first african-american diver. unfortunately something happens to him which forces the doctors at the hospital to amputate his leg, seeming that this would would ruin his chances of being a fully-qualified african-american diver for the navy. with robert de niro's character (his instructor), they work on his ability to walk again properly. both never gave up on each other even when it was tough to get through it. and cuba gooding jr's character had the chance in front of the people who decide whether he could come back into being a diver for the navy. they tell him that he needs to take at least ten steps to re-enter. with robert de niro's help, he's able to make those ten steps, getting to live his dream and the one thing that he was trying to achieve. i think someone who goes through all that trouble and at the same time has people laughing at him because no black man has ever been a diver for the navy, and having that stage where he had to amputate his leg, and where he could have given up on it like many people would have, and having the courage to get back on his feet and show that he's capable of living his dream makes it very inspiring because it teaches us not to give up or lose hope nor faith in yourself. and this song brings that out in words. here are the lyrics.

Dark is the night, I can weather the storm.
Never say die, I've been down this road before.
I'll never quit, I'll never lay down.
See, I've promised myself that I'd never let me down, so,

I'll never give up, never give in.
Never let a ray of doubt slip in.
And if I fall, I'll never faint,
I'll just get up and try again.
Never lose hope, never lose faith,
There's much too much at stake,
Upon myself I must depend.
I'm not looking for plays to show, I'm gonna win.

No stopping now, there's still a ways to go.
Ohh, someway, somehow.
Whatever it takes, I know,
I'll never quit, no, no.
I'll never go down.
I'll make sure they remember my name.
A hundred years from now.

I'll never give up, never give in.
Never let a ray of doubt slip in.
And if I fall, I'll never faint,
I'll just get up and try again.
Never lose hope, never lose faith,
There's much too much at stake,
Upon myself I must depend.
I'm not looking for plays to show, I'm gonna win.

When it's all said and done,
My once in a lifetime won back again.
Now is the time, to take a stand.
Here is my chance, that's why,

I'll never give up, never give in.
Never let a ray of doubt slip in.
And if I fall, I'll never faint,
I'll just get up and try again.
Never lose hope, never lose faith,
There's much too much at stake,
Upon myself I must depend.
I'm not looking for plays to show, I'm gonna win.

I'm gonna win.

I Hope You Dance as well as Wind Beneth My Wings both are very powerful songs...but the one that comes to mind for me is Forever Young by Bob Dylan...it is a reminder to never forget what is most important in life and always stay who we are no matter what...

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
