You can use the existing ADSL modem but do not need to go wireless unless you really want to for the laptop, or it only has a wireless internet connection and not a standard network port.

The best solution is get a router. NetGear, D-Link, Linksys are all good brands, and they all make wired-only as well as wireless & wired models (and with holiday sales can be under $50) that connects to the modem and then your computers connect to that.

Wireless poses a bit of a security risk because anyone else can also connect that is in range of the signal. Unless you change passwords on the router and use encryption (at least 128 bit WEP keys) they could access your systems.

Creating a home network depends a bit on the operating system - Windows 98, 2000, XP, etc., and can get a bit complicated - they're are good articles on the internet to help.

Ditch the crippled ADSL modem provided by the ISP and buy a REAL all in one modem/switch/router/firewall like the ZOOM ADSL X6 like I have. You get the ability to connect 4 wired, multiple wireless systems, a configurable firewall and high speed ADSL all in one package.
If you insist on keeping the modem, just buy the WRT54G by Linksys and hook up your systems that way.
Just plug the PC Ethernet cable into the switch, configure the wireless connection to the laptop and link to the modem and you are all set.

Dont buy a switch and dont connect the two pcs together! Its a pain in the *** keepin them running and the later you have to have the main pc on to use the other one! Buy a wireless router! You will need wireless nic cards for the pcs also. To Gordon, you cant eliminate the modem! The router connects between the modem and the pcs!

You could network the laptp to the PC and activate intenet connection sharing on the network connection. simply connect the two with a crossover network cable.

With Laptops the best way would be to use a wireless network.

To be honest though you would be better getting a wireless router and ditching the modem.

You could just buy a wireless router and plug you modem into that. Then you can plug your PC into one of the ports on the router. Then plug in your laptop and configure it so its wireless. It will have instructions and usually a setup cd-rom which comes with the router.
