clarification: I want to get a new PC but I'm wondering if vistas is going to result in a price increase compared to what's currently available, e.g. $400-500 dell w/ XP.

Vista is not yet released.
Due Jan 2007 (but it's been delayed so many times we'll just wait and see).

The massive increase in minimum system specifications to run Vista with the important new features activated when compared to XP minimum requirements will mean that the average consumer is going to want a far more powerful machine so they can experience Vista in it's full glory.

The increase in specs will mean that the average person is going to buy more expensive machines to pay for the higher specs.

But Vista itself won't increase the cost much between what is being paid for XP now.

A $US500 Dell is not going to run Vista in full form so it's a bit moot anyway.

No;
the commercial release of vista is probably in jan or feb 2007
see what this' average price' is referng to the cost of OS
then know it will be reasonably priced near to the XP MCE
however a high end computer is req. therefore u need to spend
on the comp. to 'actually' use the VISTA

pcs are not being sold with vista yet, as it will be released January 30th, 2007. i believe that it will up the prices of computers because it requires more resources than xp, thus a vista based very low end computer, would be the equivelant of today's xp based mid range computer. also, windows vista is more expensive than xp, so prices are sure to go up a bit

Announced Release date is Jan 30, 2007, but, Microsoft is a convicted FELON and lies often about their products. In fact, those deceptions and lies are the major reason their probation was extended for THREE MORE YEARS!

You will need all NEW, HIGH-END, REGISTERED hardware for Vista!!!

BUT, a $500 Dell WILL run http://pclinuxos.com VIRUS PROOF and upto 50X faster!!! You can run it on anything from about 400 Mhz, and up.

Comes with 5500 FREE games, and apps.
