I know of a pilot who, now retired from flying planes, has a copy of Flight Simulator. I once asked him what he thought of the game and he told me that it truly was a flight simulator, ie. much like flying real planes. But still, to say that you can learn how to fly a real plane from it, I wouldn't go that far. The game could teach you basics, like what sort of buttons and types of things are in the cockpit, and what certain instruments measure... But it's not like the real deal.
Compare it with a Car Racing game... The most realistic one i've played is Gran Turismo on my PS2 way back. Its not sufficient enough to teach people how to drive real cars. You can master the game and still be a dumbass on the road. ( Although I know to compare Flight Simulator with GT is a little weak, but the point still stands that it doesnt teach you all you need to know )

Flight Simulator cannot actually teach you all of the aspects of flying. It is what it is: a flight simulator. It simulates what it would be like if you were actually flying. There is so much that goes into learning how to fly, it would be impossible to learn everything from the program.
My dad is a pilot and he swears by Flight Simulator. He flys on his computer quite frequently and says that the simulator is pretty accurate to some degree. The technicalities are included into the program, but of course, you won't get the "real" piloting experience. My dad, however, has also built an entire setup on his computer for flying including a throttle, pedals, etc. to make it more realistic. He began using Flight Simulator when he started taking classes and training for his pilot's license.
On another note, using Flight Simulator for fun convinced a completely uninterested friend of mine to become a pilot. He moved to Oklahoma from Ohio and now attends a flight academy.

Sort of. It teaches a few of the basics. I've heard from pilots that FS is actually harder to land a plane in than the real deal.

It is just a game. Flying takes more than what the game itself teaches you.
