Im from the philippines and our countrys definately poorer than the US but whenever im here I see how much fun it is back at home. Sure I love it here, but the way I see people living here its almost always work work work work. I guess its also because I grew up in the philippines thats why I think its much more fun there. But its also because we have close family ties which I rarely see here

I think that the American idea of what makes them happy and the idea in other countries about what makes them happy are different. I'm not sure that I can answer the question unless I know what happiness means.
From my own experience and using my own definition, and I've been to at least a dozen countries, I would say that people in many other countries are happier than Americans. For example, the Filipinos in Saipan make low wages but for the most part are very friendly and happy people. Their happiness is an internally generated happiness rather than a materialistic or externally generated happiness that is true of many Americans.

I moved to Saigon six years ago from America, the people here are so poor and the wages so low, no hospital care but the people live a very slowed down relaxed life style. They have time for coffee and visits, feel this is a great place for me to retire. Help out the poor children and the elderly when ever I have a little money to spare.

I think it is because they live a simple wholesome life, hunting, family, survival etc. Where we are 'civilized', we have more stress, high powered jobs, structure we must conform to, bills- it's all a factor, if we are stressing and busy- we tend to not stop and smell the roses. I know a boy who my son plays with. He is the happiest kid I know, however he is or his parents are poor. He is unspoiled and seems to understand why he cannot have certain things (cell phone, Mp3 players) when he does get something nice he takes care of it and he appreciates it and is pleased, not wanting more or being spoiled, like many kids are today.

They don't even know what they're missing. We're the
ones killing our own over a pair of sneakers, or a bike.
