The largest bear is actually the Kodiak Bear, which is a subspecies of Grizzly bear that lives only on Kodiak Island off Alaska. The Polar Bear comes second.

First of all, in response to some of your other answers, I'd just like to point out that the grizzly bear and Kodiak bear are not species in their own right, they're simply subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos). Secondly, it depends what you mean by 'largest'. By weight, the brown bear is the biggest species - it can weigh up to 1,720lb. However, by length, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the largest - it weighs up to 1,500lb, but measures up to 11 feet in length, whereas the brown bear measures only about 9 feet. In the past, however, there were larger species of bear. The short-faced bear (Arctodus simus), which lived in prehistoric North America from about 800,000 to 12,500 years ago, stood stood as high as 7 feet at the shoulder and is estimated to have matched the brown bear in weight. The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), which lived in Europe during the Pleistocene and became extinct at the end of the last ice age about 20,000 years ago, averages 30% larger than the brown bear.

Well said, Alberto.
The Kodiak Brown Bear is the largest, followed by the Polar Bear.
Discrepancy can occur when people refer to height, length or weight as determining factors. You should also consider whether the largest recorded or average size are being measured.
