Just pack up and go! Montreal is a very cultrually diverse city, you don't need to speak french to live there. Things get funny with educating the children there, so make sure you really get your facts straight before going.

Under the Charter of the French Language, children in the following three categories may be enrolled in English-language schools:

children who are permanent residents of Québec and who qualify for a certificate of eligibility for instruction in English
children who are permanent residents of Québec and who are entitled to receive instruction in English under a special authorization
children who are living in Québec temporarily and who qualify for a temporary authorization to receive instruction in English

all of those situations apply to Cdn citizens. If your American I think it may be more difficult, so read carefully!

You will have to apply for immigration status.

You can stay in Canada up to 180 days out of 365 days without a visa, but you cannot work or do anything that requires a SIN (similar to our SSN), which includes renting, utilities, etc.

In order to settle in Canada, you have to apply for and be granted a temporary or permanent resident Visa. The process takes on average 1-3 years, and costs about $1,200 per person with all fees and expenses involved. There are also specific regulations in regards to Quebec.

Just do it. But if you are not accepted for immigration (which nust be by both the Quebec and the Canadian federal governments) you all must return to the USA at least once every 6 months.
